If you’ve been around here long, you know that I seek to find intentional gifts to share with friends and family. As the holidays approach, I am brainstorming what I can share this year, and typically I am looking for something I can make.

You won’t hear me criticize a gift, because I do believe “it’s the thought that counts,” but I do try and find unique gifts for people in my life. There is nothing wrong with traditional Christmas cookies, but I strive to find something that won’t be lost amongst all the other goodies, and just end up stale on the counter.

I believe there is something so genuine about homemade gifts. It shows people that you took the time to make something for them, and it can be an inexpensive option. Homemade presents bring a simple solution to all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, plus, it can give you and your loved ones a chance to create together.

Mason jars are a simple way to share gifts at the holidays. Their air-tight nature keeps food items safe, and they are simple to spruce up. I share more about decorating mason jars for gifts here. Although I use the term “mason jars,” I often use other glass jars from jam, apple butter, etc. to share. All of these can be adapted and shared in whatever container works best for you, I just tend to have jars lying around!

So I have collected (and now share with you!) some of my favorite winter mason jar gift ideas!

Glass jars filled with granola.

Homemade Granola

A yummy snack, but something different than the traditional Christmas cookies! I add cranberries and white chocolate chips to give it some festive color. Check out my favorite recipe here.

Vanilla

You have to think ahead on this one, but small jars of homemade vanilla are such a thoughtful gift! I found a set of adorable, small, glass jars at a garage sale, so I decided to try this homemade recipe for the first time this year! I used this recipe from Simple Homestead Life.

Winter Trail Mix

Trail mix is my favorite snack, so I usually have all the ingredients in my pantry. Add some reds and greens to give your trail mix that holiday look!

All you need are some cranberries, oranges, and spices, and your house is smelling like Christmas! Check out this one from Brick House on Green. It’s a great recipe for fall and winter.

Homemade snack mix in a variety of dishes.

Holmes Family Snack Mix

A step up from traditional trail mix, this homemade snack mix is a family favorite from my dad’s side of the family. From my grandma, to my dad, and now to me, it runs in the family! We even served it at our wedding. You can find the recipe and details here.

Jar labeled "salted caramel coffee creamer" on gingham towel.

Salted Caramel Coffee Creamer

You will find this one on all of my seasonal drink lists. This winner from Jill Winger’s The Prairie Homestead Cookbook, is always a hit! Add this creamer to a coffee, or simply gift the creamer itself. I wrote about it here.

Dog treats

Yes, you read that correctly! One year, my son had the idea that not only our neighbors needed gifting, but so did our neighbor dogs. Thus, we added dog treats to the list. Our dog-parent neighbors loved it! You will find these in my fall list as well, but they’re fun to give as a Christmas present to our furry friends. We like this recipe because it’s so simple. My kids can do it by themselves!

Don’t have any mason jars?

I usually don’t have extra mason jars lying around the house. Instead of buying new jars, I like to save jars from jams, sauces, etc. I clean them in hot, soapy water, and they’re ready to use!

How to decorate a mason jar?

If we have time, my kids and I decorate the jars to add an extra handmade touch. Some paint, ribbon, and a handmade card can go a long way. I share some of those ideas in this post.

Truthfully, it doesn’t matter what you put your gift in. Although I am a big fan of “small touches,” I also know there are seasons when all you have is a Ziploc bag, and that is more than enough. Take the extra step to give homemade gifts, and the wrapping won’t matter!
