Wrapping Christmas presents is one of my favorite holiday activities. I love wrapping, and I always have. I’m pretty sure I’d be content to wrap presents as a full-time job!
Early in December, once the kids are in bed, I like to sprawl all our wrapping supplies on the living room floor and wrap their presents. I smile to myself picturing their faces as they open their hand-picked gifts from their dad and me.
It brings me joy to look at all the paper, ribbon, and bows, and wrapping the precious gifts I have chosen for others; carefully writing the names of the people I love on each package.
We added our hand-embroidered Christmas ribbon to the blog this year, and now I want to add embroidery to all my Christmas wrapping! It adds an extra touch of thoughtfulness to each present.
Here at Home Sweet Harps, gifting with intentionality is something you will read time and time again. So why not gift wrap with intentionality too? Because I believe Christmas wrapping can have a certain intentionality to it.
A sparkly pink ribbon for a glitter-loving niece. A monster truck gift tag for a vehicle-loving toddler. Even my own handwriting sketching the names of my loved ones on their packages.
Even now as I’m writing this, I am smiling and looking forward to the careful cutting of paper, and tying of ribbon.
I recently tried using my embroidery skills on cardstock with these adorable paper bookmarks, and now I am hooked on paper embroidery!
Then, I came across a similar idea on Pinterest, but with paper gift tags. I designed some for myself, and LOVE them!
So today I am sharing our embroidered paper Christmas tags, and we’ve included a free printable for you!
Let’s start with materials needed for this project.
Materials
- Blank cardstock paper tags
- Embroidery Floss
- Embroidery Needles
- Pencil
- Free printable!
- Stamps and ink (optional)
How to make Embroidered Paper Christmas Tags
- The first step in making these embroidered paper Christmas tags, is to sketch your design.* We have a FREE printable for you if you want to replicate our pattern!
- Next, thread your needle with embroidery floss color of your choice.
- Stitch your design.*
- Tie a small knot in the back to secure thread.
- (Optional) Use holiday-themed stamps to add words to your Christmas tag.
Here are the Christmas tags with stamped words, and without. My MIL has an array of stamps, so I borrowed from her. A cute touch, but not a necessity!
When it comes to adding these embroidered paper Christmas tags to your wrapped packages, you can use ribbon or twine to attach.
Another option is to write the receiver’s name on your Christmas tags as a way to label your package.
Such a simple way to add embroidery to your gift wrapping this year!
Notes:
How do I keep my sketches clean?
When sketching your design, it may be helpful to use simple dots or faded lines so it can be easily covered by your thread, or erased later!
What size sewing needle should be used for embroidering on paper?
Remember, when working with cardstock, you want to use a small sewing needle. You’re working with paper, so making large holes can cause tears, and won’t allow you to keep your stitches close together. Stick with size 8 or 9.
What kind of stitches should be used on embroidered paper projects?
For this project, I stuck with satin stitch, and stem stitch throughout.
