I am so excited to share this adorable Christmas tree embroidery pattern with you!
Several months ago, my sister-in-law asked me to embroider two sweatshirts: a fall one with pumpkins, and a Christmas one with trees.
She sent a few inspiration photos, then let me run with it!
I love custom orders and trying new embroidery skills, and I was thrilled with the way both sweatshirts turned out.
(You can see some photos of the fall sweatshirt in this post or on my Instagram. So cute!)
Today I am sharing this adorable hand embroidered Christmas tree pattern with you!

This pattern is highly versatile, and can be used for a variety of projects.
If you have seen some of our embroidery posts before, you know that I like to stick to simple stitches, and beginner-friendly patterns. Depending on your season of life, you may not have the time to learn new and complex stitches!
Would you believe me if I said this piece only uses ONE stitch? It’s true!
This DIY is similar to our hand embroidered Christmas Tree napkins, another favorite of mine (and another free pattern!)
So let’s get started! First, let’s make sure we have the materials needed for this festive project!
Materials:

- Plain sweatshirt – My SIL chose this simple sweatshirt from Hobby Lobby
- Needles
- Embroidery Hoops – I like to use 6″ hoops as I’m sewing!
- Floss – I chose a variety of greens and reds
- Embroidery Pens to draw or trace your design
- Scissors
- Pattern – my free pattern is below!
- Fusible Interfacing – optional, but I like to use this to cover stitching and provide a barrier between stitching and skin
So let’s make this adorable sweatshirt!
How to Make a Hand Embroidered Christmas Tree Sweatshirt:

First, draw or trace your design*. I drew my design by hand, and made it into a pattern to share with you!
Next, get sewing! I used the stem stitch for this entire project, and switched between green and red embroidery floss.
Once you are satisfied with your stitching, soak the shirt in cool water with a pinch of dish soap to erase your water soluble pen markings.
After your sweatshirt is dry, secure fusible interfacing to the back of your stitching.
And there you have it! An adorable, festive, hand embroidered gift to share!
Notes and Tips:
What other projects can I use this hand embroidered Christmas tree pattern for?
Although I used this pattern for a sweatshirt, it would make a great pattern for other shirts, hats, tea towels, or a canvas bag!
How do you trace an embroidery pattern onto your fabric?
To trace an embroidery pattern onto your fabric, start by securing fabric in your embroidery hoop. Tape your pattern to the back of your fabric. Next, hold your project up against a window, so the pattern shines through and you can trace it!
You can also buy transfer paper, called stabilizer, and print from your computer.
