I tried my hand at reverse applique for the first time, and I am now obsessed!
I made these adorable reverse applique mommy and me heart shaped shirts, and they turned out so sweet.
This project is beginner-friendly, and the cutest Valentine’s Day craft!
Let’s dive in with the materials you need for this project!
Materials
The best part about this project, is that I already had all of the materials at home! I will share links below with similar products, but search your closet first!
- Adult shirt
- Child’s shirt
- Fabric for backside (I used my daughter’s sweatshirt from when she was a newborn!)
- Sewing needles
- Embroidery hoop
- Sharp embroidery scissors
- Fusible Interfacing
- Heart-shaped cookie cutters OR my free pattern!
How to Make Reverse Applique Mommy and Me Heart Shaped Pattern
- First, cut the fabric for the backside of your shirts. You will want this piece to be larger than your hoop.
- Cut the fusible interfacing just smaller than your backside fabric, then iron according to directions.
- Use heart-shaped cookie cutters or my free pattern to trace your design onto your shirt.
4. Adjust hoop to pattern. The backside fabric should be directly under the pattern, and larger than your hoop.
5. Next, use a backstitch to stitch around your hearts pattern.
6. Once you stitch all three hearts, use your sharp embroidery scissors to carefully cut away the top shirt’s fabric and reveal your backside fabric below. Be careful not to cut into the fabric underneath.
7. Complete step six for all three hearts, and you now have an adorable reverse applique Valentine’s shirt for you and your mini!
